Essays and Personal Statements
Organize your thoughts about the materials for the essays you will be asked to write.
How do you wish to present yourself? What have been the important influences in your decision to enter a medical profession? What has your practical experience in health care meant to you? What are your long range goals? What kind of physician do you want to be?
Essays and Personal Statements are a vital part of the application for all the medical professions. You will need to write essays/personal statements as part of your primary application and for secondary applications as well. This is your opportunity to present yourself as an individual rather than as a statistic; so prepare your essays carefully and use the opportunity to provide information that you feel will be most helpful to your application.
In all cases, it is important that the essay be clear, easy to read, free of errors, and grammatically correct. Take pride in what you submit. Recognize your strengths and maintain perspective. Be serious, but not boring, and make your presentation honest and true. It is always a good idea to ask at least one other person to read your essay for content, spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Please feel free to ask your adviser to review it. Bear in mind that it will take you a long time to write a good personal statement.
