Journey to Orissa: Odissi Music & Dance
Mouli Pal and Upasana with special guests
This concert presents an ensemble of musicians, vocalists, and dancers performing the classical music and dance of Odissi, rarely if ever heard live in the United States. Featuring leading artists who have trained in their respective fields for numerous years, the performance includes dancer and Upasana director Mouli Pal, New Mexico-based percussionist Phillip Hollenbeck on the mardala, leading New England Hindustani classical singers Ujjawal Parikh and Shraddha Agarwal, and accomplished musicians Gopi Shanker on flute and Sahana Srinivasan on violin. Also featuring acclaimed dancers Shamoyita Mukherjee and Payal Mistry, who will bring the Konarak temple sculptures to life.
Highlighting the interaction of the dancer and musicians in invocations, pure dance, and expressional dance, the lyrical music is supported by an intricate rhythm pattern of exceptional beauty. Like the blossoming of a flower, the music gradually unfolds the particular Raaga, creating an intricate tapestry of rhythm and melody. Depicting deep emotion through song and story, lyrical choreography, and a rhyme of eternal love and supreme devotion, a symbolic representation of the love of Krishna and Radha creates a mood of romance and tragedy, resolved with a fast-paced dance of ecstasy and joy.
This event is free and open to the public, however RSVPs are strongly suggested to guarantee seats. Reception will follow.
