Wellesley Blue Sports Summary

Wellesley's 14 varsity sports stay busy throughout the year, as do the Wellesley Blue superfans!

Winter 2011-12 Season Wrap Up

Basketball

The basketball team finished the regular season 12-11 overall. Wellesley qualified for the NEWMAC tournament as the #4 seed, hosting a home playoff game for the first time in 10 seasons. The team defeated Springfield in the quarterfinals, but fell in the semifinals to nationally ranked Babson (who won the final). Malia Maier ‘13 and Leslie Leong ‘14 were named All-Conference.

Fencing

The fencing team finished its dual meet season with a record of 11-10 and sent seven fencers to the NCAA Regional Tournament on March 11. Carla The ‘15 led the way for the Blue, ending the day in 21st place in her first NCAA event. Captains Dania Wright ‘14 and senior Zsofia Schweger placed 32nd and 33rd respectively, both personal best NCAA finishes. The Blue won its home invitational and built on that success to finish 8th overall at the New England Championships.

Squash

The squash team ended its regular season with an 11-13 overall record, with a runner-up finish at the Seven Sisters Championship. The Blue qualified for the CSA “C” Division Championships for the first time in four seasons, finishing the season with a win over Connecticut College and a #23 national ranking. Rosemary O’Connor ‘14 was the lone representative to compete in the CSA Individual Championship on March 2-3.

Swimming & Diving

The swimming and diving team took home its 15th-straight Seven Sisters title and capped an outstanding year with a third-place finish at the NEWMAC Championships. A NEWMAC title from Keelin Nave ‘14 in the 200-fly highlighted the action at the event. Nave and diver Hayley Goydan ‘14 represented Wellesley at the NCAA Championships, with Nave placing 12th in the 200-fly, while Goydan placed 10th on the 1-meter board and 11th on the 3-meter board. Nave earned honorable mention All-America honors for her finish, while Goydan’s scores also earned All-America honors in both boards.

Track & Field

The indoor track and field team raced strong all winter led by ECAC and New England Qualifiers Molly Shanley ‘12, Leah Clement ‘12, and Camille Basurto ‘13. Despite not racing much of the season, Randelle Boots ‘13 qualified for the NCAA Championships in the mile where she finished as an All-American for the sixth time in her career.
