Language Policy

Effective for study abroad during or after the fall 2011 semester

Wellesley College is committed to providing its students with the highest quality of instruction in foreign languages and believes that the ability to function at a high level in the local or predominant language of a culture is essential for understanding foreign cultures. To complement language instruction on campus, Wellesley College students are encouraged to select study abroad experiences in countries where English is not commonly spoken. It is the responsibility of the student who wishes to undertake a substantial international experience to gain the necessary linguistic competency:

  • For study abroad where the language of instruction is in a language other than English, students are expected to complete a minimum of four semesters of the target language at Wellesley, or the equivalent of 202, prior to study abroad and are expected to continue with language study for the duration of their studies abroad. Students should be aware that some study abroad programs and academic departments require a higher level of proficiency and they should plan their curriculum accordingly.

  • For study abroad in a country whose predominant language is not English, but in a program where instruction is done in English, students are expected to demonstrate proficiency in the local language equivalent to two semesters of study at the elementary level prior to study abroad. In cases where the predominant language is not offered at Wellesley, or for students pursuing studies in the Classics, students may meet the language requirement by enrolling in a for-credit language course in the predominant local language for the duration of their studies abroad.

Any exceptions to the policy above would require approval of the International Study Committee.
