Registering for courses

1.  In the Add Classes Worksheet portion of the page, you may begin the registration process by placing your cursor in the first CRN field and typing in your first CRN.

2.  Moving your cursor with the mouse or the tab key, continue to insert CRNs in each of the blocks until you have recorded all of your course selections, including lab, conference and discussion sections.

3.  When all of your CRNs are recorded, click on Submit Changes.  This step processes your registration.  If you skip this step, the courses won’t be added to your schedule!

Registering for courses with a lab, discussion, or conference (linked courses)

If you are registering for a course that requires lab or conference section, you must register for both at the same time (with one submit).

1.  In the Add Classes Worksheet portion of the page, place your cursor in the first CRN field and type in the CRN for the lecture portion of the course.

2. Place your cursor in the second CRN field and type in the CRN for the desired  lab/discussion/conference portion of the course.

3.  When both (or all) of your CRNs are entered, click Submit Changes.

If you are unable to register for one of the sections in a linked coures, you must once again enter both CRNs at the same time to obtain the registration.  If you do register for both sections and then decided to drop one section to attempt to register for a different section, you must drop both sections and then register for both CRNs again.

Lastly, if you register for both sections and then later drop one section but not the other, leaving only one part of the registration on your record, you may be automatically dropped from the course at any time during or at the end of the registration or add/drop period.

You have selected a course that requires lab or conference sections or vice versa. Add the course CRN again, along with the lab or conference section. One will not be accepted as registered without the other. If all labs or conferences are full but there is space in the lecture, request the instructor do an electronic override.

Confirming your registration

1.  Your registration results appear and include courses for which you are registered successfully and courses in which an error was encountered, with options for resolution.  Courses for which you are successfully registered appear first.

2.  Closed courses and those for which errors were encountered appear next, in a Registration Errors section.  Please refer to the chart below detailing error messages and next steps.  If you exit the registration process and do nothing about the errors or closed courses, the courses listed will disappear from your record and it will be as if you never attempted to register for them.

3.  There are 10 columns of information for each course:
Status - the fact that you are Web Registered appears here
Action - if registration is successful, then the word “None” appears, indicating that no further action is required
CRN, Subject, Course Number, Section – identifies the specific course
Level – the level of the course (undergraduate)
Credit – the number of units the course carries (usually either 1.00 or 1.25)
Grade Mode – this distinguishes between taking a course for a grade and credit/non

Adjusting your schedule

How to add another course
1.  Scroll down to the Add Classes Worksheet portion of the screen.

2.  Proceed as you did with your original registration by typing in the CRNs you want to add.

3.  Click on Submit Changes to add the course(s). If you skip this step, the course(s) won’t be added to your schedule!

How to add a course with required instructor consent

1.  Before adding a course with required instructor consent, you first need to request and obtain "electronic override" by the professor.

2.  Once the electronic approval has been entered by the professor, you can add the course following the “How to add another course” instructions above.  A professor entering the electronic approval doesn’t automatically register you in the course.  If you skip this step, the course won’t be added to your schedule!

How to drop courses for which you are registered

1.  If you wish to drop a course from your current schedule, click on the pull down menu in the action column to the left of the course and select WEB DROP.

2.  Click on Submit Changes to drop course from your schedule.  If you skip this step, the course(s) won’t be dropped from your schedule!

How to declare a course credit/non
1.  Log in to Banner Self Service, select ‘Student Services’, click on the link for ‘Registration’, and then click on the link called Change Class Options.

2.  When you click on this link, the courses for which you are registered will display with an action window next to the "Grading Mode" line. If you wish to declare a course credit/non, choose the option called "Credit/Non" and then click on the Submit Changes button.  If you skip this step, the course(s) won’t be declared credt/non! (Note: To change your MIT course to credit/non during add/drop, you should also be following these same online credit/non directions.).

3.  Check your changes: Return to the Registration menu and click on the link called Student Detail Schedule. Verify that the correct course has been marked with the credit/non designation and print out a copy of the screen. If there is any question about the status of a course that you wished to declare credit/non, this printed document will be required to verify that the declaration was completed.

How to register for an Independent Study or Thesis

1.  Students registering for an Independent Study (250/250H/350/350H)
You must first see the department. You can’t register online for these courses. Departments will submit a list containing student names, IDs, advisors, and course numbers to the Registrar’s Office. It is your responsibility to verify your schedule prior to the end of the add period.
2.  Students registering for a Thesis (360):
You must first see your major department. You can’t register online for a thesis. Departments will submit a list containing student names, IDs, and Thesis advisors to the Registrar’s Office.  The Registrar’s Office will then register you for your specific Thesis section and you will be able to check your updated schedule online. It is your responsibility to verify your schedule prior to the end of the add period.

Using the class search capability

1.  The online registration system allows you to search the class schedule using any of the selection options provided.  You may click on the Class Search button at the bottom of the registration screen or click on the Look Up Class To Add from the Registration menu. This is particularly helpful when you want to see what sections of a particular course have spaces, find out the CRN for a specific course, find out what sections meet at a specified time and day, or you want to find all courses taught by a particular instructor.

2.  You must select a subject area from the pull-down menu and may choose any of the other criteria.

3.  When you have completed your selection criteria click on Class Search; this form returns the classes which have met your selection criteria, along with a check box to the left of the course only if there is space left in the course (or the notation that the course is closed if it is full.)

4.  If you find a course or courses that you want to add to your schedule, click on the check box to the left of the course.  When adding classes, you may click either the Register or the Add to Worksheet button.
      a.  The Register button will check to see if you have any class conflicts or any other registration errors and add the classes to your schedule.
      b.  The Add to worksheet button will put the classes into the registration form of the Add/Drop Classes page and allow you to continue selecting classes by clicking on Class Search and following the procedure above.

5.  Once you have selected your class(es), click on Submit Changes. If you skip this step, the courses won’t be added to your schedule!

Student schedule by day & time and student detail schedule
