Leah Fygetakis

Director of Services and Programs and Advisor for LGBTQ Students

Dr. Leah M. Fygetakis directs education, programming, and advising efforts for the Wellesley community in understanding the experience of those who may identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. She is a licensed psychologist and holds the additional credential of a graduate certificate in leadership development and executive coaching. In addition to serving as a general advisor to all LGBT and questioning students, Leah particularly wishes to provide a safe harbor for students who may be trying to manage multiple identities across gender, race, ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation. She is also committed to helping all students develop their strengths as leaders.

Prior to starting her work at Wellesley College, Leah taught courses in psychology and women’s studies and she directed a university counseling and wellness center serving a community of 37,000. Areas under her leadership included coaching and psychotherapy, career testing and development, a public health education-based program, a doctoral internship training program, academic success services, and organizational consultation and training for university personnel.

Leah is an accomplished educator and consultant on issues of LGBTQ diversity in organizations. She has addressed a wide variety of audiences including the American Association for Affirmative Action, the Board of Directors of the St. Paul-Minneapolis Water and Sewer Commission, leaders in higher education, health-care professionals, and a few international audiences. Recognized for her ability to reach across professions as well as into the general public, she was honored by the Society for the Psychological Study of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Issues of the American Psychological Association with their Distinguished Education and Training Award. Leah has been similarly honored with an award given by the Association for Women in Psychology for her groundbreaking research in understanding the interplay of the multiple identities of being Greek, female, and lesbian.

Outside of Wellesley College, Leah has volunteered her time or served as a board member for several small and large nonprofit organizations. She has provided pro bono executive coaching services to women leaders who have been recipients of Root Cause's Social Innovators Award and has served as a regular manuscript reviewer for the Journal of Psychological Issues in Organizational Culture. She currently serves as a representative for the North East Region of the Consortium of Higher Education LGBT Resource Professionals.
