ARTS 105 Drawing I

Clara Lieu, Visiting Instructor of Art
An introduction to the fundamentals of drawing with attention to the articulation of line, shape, form, gesture, perspective, and value. Studio work introduces a range of traditional drawing tools and observational methods while exploring a variety of approaches to image making and visual expression. In-class drawing exercises and weekly homework assignments address a range of subjects with brief attention given to the human figure. Prerequisite: None. Not open to seniors except by permission of the instructor.

Clara Lieu is a professor and visual artist. She completed a BFA in Illustration at the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA in Sculpture at the New York Academy of Art. Her work explores themes of isolation with an interdisciplinary approach which includes drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture. Clara is a Visiting Lecturer and the Director of the Jewett Art Gallery in the Art Department at Wellesley College. She is also a Critic in the Division of Foundation Studies and the Illustration Department at the Rhode Island School of Design. She was previously a Visiting Professor in the Drawing Area at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and an Adjunct Professor at the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University. Her work has been exhibited at the International Print Center New York, Bromfield Gallery, the Danforth Museum of Art, and the Boston Printmakers North American Print Biennial. Over the past few years, she has also completed portrait painting commissions for several clients in the Boston area. Clara is also an oboist and has performed with several orchestras and chamber groups in Boston, Providence, and New York City. She performed with the Greenwich Village Orchestra in New York City, and currently plays with the New Philharmonia Orchestra as Assistant Principal Oboe. http://claralieu.com/
