Plantastic Family Days
The Botanic Gardens hosts free programs for visitors of all ages to
discover through art, literature, culture and science just how fantastic
plants can be. Hands-on activities, crafts and scavenger hunts will
engage everyone from toddlers to college students to grandparents.
Superplants: Monday, January 20
Drop in any time between 1:00 and 4:00 p.m. to explore.
Just like Marvel comic characters, there are plants with superpowers.
Have you heard of a plant whose fruit has the power to make sour foods
taste sweet? Some superpowered plants are highly nutritious, while
others are super-competitive – which is great for them, but not for the
plants around them! Search for our greenhouse superplants and start
some super sprouts to take home.
Spice Plants: Monday, February 17
Drop in any time between 1:00 and 4:00 p.m. to explore.
Meet some plants whose spices inspired long trading voyages, sold
for incredible prices, and transformed cooking. Learn what spice
combinations characterize some of the world’s cuisines. Take our spice
taste test and see if you can identify these popular flavors.
The Plantastic World of Harry Potter: Saturday, May 10
Drop in any time between 1:00 and 4:00 p.m. to explore.
While whomping willow and puffapod sprang from the
imagination of author J. K. Rowling, other plants used by
Harry Potter and his wizardly friends are quite real and
have stories of their own to tell. Meet a mandrake and
see if it screams. Explore our selection of wand woods and
potion ingredients. Try some pumpkin juice. Come dressed
as your favorite character from the Harry Potter books!
