Fiction writer engaged in the teaching of fiction writing, especially the short story.
I'm a fiction writer. My stories have been published in The New Yorker and numerous anthologies. My novel, A Stranger on the Planet , was published by Soho press in January 2011.
Most of my courses focus on the short story. My fiction writing informs my teaching of writing most fundamentally through my emphasis on writing as a process. Many of the challenges I face writing fiction— how to come up with ideas; how to bend, shape, and revise those ideas; how to overcome resistance and doubt — are the same challenges faced by students in Writing 125 courses.
I'm the father of an independent 15-year-old daughter and a co-dependent 13-year-old black lab.
