Welcome to your senior year, Class of 2020!

Gathered here is a great deal of useful information for seniors, including information about finishing your degree and participating in Commencement. Plan to check back frequently as we add to this material over the year, and let either Dean Garcia or Dean Tenser know if you have questions or suggestions about other topics to include.

Commencement Information and resources

Commencement will take place on Sunday, May 31st, and the events office has a detailed schedule along with information for you and your family.  At the moment, that page has information about last year's ceremony and that will be updated as the year passes.

There are some rules about who can participate.

  • Seniors who are close to completing their degrees may participate in the Commencement ceremony even though they will not actually receive their diplomas on the day of Commencement.
  • Seniors who have completed eight semesters must be within two units or two requirements of completing their degrees in order to march at Commencement.
  • Seniors who have completed only seven semesters and so are eligible to return to Wellesley for another semester may march as long as they are of diploma-grade standing.

If you anticipate that you will be in either of these categories, please see either Dean Tenser or Dean Garcia as soon as possible to discuss your plans. Please also let them know if you will be completing your degree in December or if you will be returning for your eighth semester in fall 2020 and prefer to wait until the 2021 Commencement.

When is Hoop Rolling this year?

Hoop Rolling event takes place Saturday, April 18th, 2020

Hoop-rolling began as an activity once held on May Day. May Day was a day of frivolity and child's play to escape from real-world worries. Students celebrated by dressing up in children's clothing and playing games on Severance Green. One of the most popular was the hoop rolling race.

Hoop-rolling has become a Wellesley institution in itself and is now held independently in late April.

For the Class of 2020,  the Office of Student Involvement handles sales of the hoops (pre-ordering required).  March 4, 2020 is the last day to order hoops:

Fill out the order form HERE: Hoop Order Form

Traditional Schedule of Events

Little Sisters (underclasswomen) camp out the night before the event to hold a spot for their Big Sisters (upperclasswomen) on Tupelo Lane.

Hoops are passed down to seniors or provided by Cafe Hoop—and then are decorated.

Come morning, the seniors arrive—dressed for success in their Commencement gowns and class colors.

At a signal, the seniors race down the lane, pushing their hoops with a wooden stick.

Back in the day, it was proclaimed that whoever won the Hoop Roll would be the first to get married. In the status-seeking 1980s, she was the first to be CEO. Now we just say that the winner will be the first to achieve happiness and success, whatever that means to her.

The winner is carried away by her Wellesley Sisters...

...and has the honor of being thrown into Lake Waban.

  • Important: If you think that you will have a problem meeting this deadline please contact your Class Dean immediately.
  • You may check the status of your request or cancel your requests at: MyWellesley > Administrivia >Transfer of Credit Requests
  • If you see a Transfer Credit course is missing on your record and/or is missing a distribution and the hosting institution has sent us a transcript, please contact us at registrar@wellesley.edu immediately.

Study Abroad Transcript for Fall 2019 Term: In most cases, your program or hosting university/college will send Wellesley College (Office of International Studies (OIS) an official transcript automatically. However, as a senior you should contact your program directly and ask them if they can expedite the process so we have your transcript by March 1st. Once we receive the transcript, OIS will evaluate the credit values. Your transcript will be forwarded to the Registrar’s office for posting after you submit your study abroad survey using Abroad 101.com. Please note, you do not need to fill out a Transfer Credit Request form for a Study Abroad course that has an equivalent subject/department at Wellesley, falls under the category liberal arts and for which you do not wish to request distribution, major or minor credit. Submit a Transfer Credit Request Form if you wish to count the course toward an unmet distribution or major/minor requirement. Asking for approval for multiple requirements that you have already completed may delay your form as it sometimes requires review by multiple department chairs.
