I explore themes of love, home, and family through the lens of epigenetics and the inner workings of the mind. To me, the relationship between emotions and brain chemistry are inseparable, and one cannot detach the haptic aspect of art from how it is read and experienced by the mind.

My work stems from the experiences of my mother and grandmother and their stories. Using printmaking, drawing, photography, I explore maternal relationships and barriers in communication and culture. Playing with repetition, shape, and color, I address language, misunderstanding, and intimacy. Experimentation is at the core of my process. The interdisciplinary nature of my work allows it to take many forms: from an edition of prints, to a site specific drawing, to a scientific experiment.

*Alexa is a student in the Class of 2021. However, this year she participated fully in ARTS 317/318, Wellesley's full year Advanced Independent Senior Projects course, which allows many students to develop their senior art projects, and as such she is included in the 2020 exhibition.

Mutations
printmaking, digital collage

When I found myself back at home this spring, the trajectory of my project changed drastically. Time began to collapse due to the lack of structure. I turned to tangible creation in the form of 3D printed face shields, which print one at a time and take 70 minutes each. This segmented time into the duration of each print and created a new unexpected structure for me. That 70 minute block became the unit that defined my day.

After creating a series of monoprints loosely representative of biological material, I experimented digitally with color to create 70 versions. Alongside those, I created individual pieces consisting of 70 manipulations each.
