All Parks Closed
digital photo book

The photo book All Parks Closed is the culmination of a two-month long investigation into what it means to live in the spring of 2020. In my previous works, I have thematically explored representation, my own image, and how I interact with and feel about the spaces I inhabit. I often use slow shutter speeds and motion within my images to ground them in my own bodily experience. Since I went into self-isolation in early March of this year, the way I interact with nature and people has changed. I now only experience the space outside of my house in snapshots, as I travel to grocery stores or go on short walks, so it feels right to represent this experience through photography. My hometown, once so familiar, has become strange as I try to come to terms with ending my college career here.

All Parks Closed, which can only be accessed in an online format, represents the experience of social distancing. The subjects are isolated and the photographs themselves distanced from each other through the design layout. As school and work for non-essential employees has moved online, so has this project, yet it recalls the physicality of pre-quarantine in its nature as a book. I think back fondly to a time in which screens were only a tool for college, not the campus itself.
