INNER PEACE was a collaborative sculptural installation by students in ARTS 307, Advanced Sculptural Practices in the Fall '22 semester. It transformed the Jewett Art Gallery, turning it from an open white box space into a place of quiet discovery and a location for rest and community. A barrier interrupted the entrance to the gallery so that a visitor had to enter and navigate the installation in order to see it. A short maze of hanging panels separated the entrance from the draped gathering space, creating a zone of transition where a visitor could move from the expected environment of the academic building into a new type of space. The entire installation was made with reclaimed and recycled fabrics from old campus building projects, which were cut, sewn, stapled, knotted, and suspended on site as the class worked together to respond directly to the dimensions and features of the gallery, experimenting with the material qualities and effects of different fabrics and forms.

This exhibition was on view in the Jewett Art Gallery from November 18 through 29, 2022.
