The Elizabeth Crawford ’21 Haystack Fellowship (graduates)

EXTENDED Campus deadline: 12:00 PM (noon) Eastern on January 29, 2024

The Haystack Mountain School of Crafts is an international craft school located on the Atlantic Ocean in Deer Isle, Maine. Founded in 1950 as a research and studio program in the arts, Haystack offers one and two-week studio workshops to participants of all skill levels as well as the two-week, Open Studio Residency program, exhibitions, tours, auctions, artist presentations, and shorter workshops for Maine residents and high school students.

This fellowship honors Elizabeth Crawford, Wellesley Class of 1921. Crawford was one of the founders of Haystack in 1950, and the school's first pottery instructor. The Elizabeth Crawford ’21 Haystack Fellowship each year provides to a Wellesley graduate a travel grant of up to $500, as well as tuition, room and board for a two-week workshop of the Fellow’s choice (please note that at least for summer 2024: the glass workshop is not an option for this fellowship).

"The Pattern Play workshop gave me the opportunity to experience the work of other artists in multiple disciplines and practice screen printing with Jen Hewett, an artist I admire deeply. Surrounded by cool wind, towering trees, and the lap of ocean waves, I felt a sense of peace." —Tulani Reeves-Miller '21, 2023 Crawford Fellow

Eligibility

Wellesley graduates and graduating seniors of any nationality from any major.  (There is no requirement that applicants have taken art classes at Wellesley; most workshops at Haystack are designed for all levels of experience—or lack thereof.)

How do I apply?

Applicants apply for Wellesley’s nomination for the fellowship, and if nominated, they will then be able to apply directly for a workshop at Haystack (by their deadline for Fellows in late February - and note that at least for summer 2024 the glass workshop is not an option for this fellowship).

To apply for Wellesley’s nomination, submit the following materials via this form:

  • Statement of purpose (500 words or fewer) about why you would like to participate in a workshop at Haystack, which workshop you hope to take part in (please specify both a first and second choice of workshops), and why now (that is, why this summer) [Note: if the new summer workshops at Haystack have not yet been posted, please just indicate that in your essay and tell us more about why you'd like to participate in a workshop at Haystack and why now.]
  • Resume or CV
  • Wellesley signature document

*While you're at it: don't miss other fellowships offered by Haystack, or the chance to be a technical assistant!
