Wellesley Career Education Winter Job Shadow Program

Make the most of your winter break by taking part in a one-day job shadow opportunity to explore a career field or industry of interest to you! The winter job shadow program engages alums and parents in cities across the country to host a student for a half day or full day at their current organization on Tuesday, January 14 or Wednesday, January 15.

What is a job shadow?

A job shadow is an educational experience that allows students to learn more about a particular career path, industry, company, or role by spending time with (“shadowing”) an experienced professional on the job for a designated amount of time, typically for a day or less. In many ways, a job shadow is similar to an informational interview; however, job shadows provide the added benefit of combining in-person discussion with on-site experience.

How will students be matched with an alumna or parent?

To be matched, students much complete the Winter Job Shadown Matching Form by Monday, December 2 at 11:30pm. Your answers to the form will allow Career Education to gain a better sense of your career goals and the industries you are excited to explore. Job shadows across industries can be valuable in many different ways, and we encourage students to approach the program with an open mind and understanding of the breadth of learning opportunities that exist from a variety of professionals.

Students will be notified of matches by Friday, December 6. Please note that while not all students will receive a match due to location or alumnae participation, we highly encourage anyone interested to sign up to see what opportunities may exist.

Eligibility

All current Wellesley students are eligible to apply to participate each year.

Requirements

Students are required to attend a one hour preparation session on either December 11, 2019 at 4pm or December 12, 2019 at 1pm. If neither session works with your schedule, you may fulfill this requirement by meeting with your Career Community Advisor or College Career Mentor. More information will be shared when matches are sent on December 6.

Travel Expenses

If you are unable to afford the travel expense associated with getting to and from your job shadow site, you may apply to receive up to $50 to cover this expense through a Wintersession Mini Grant. After you are notified if you have a match, you will have until Friday, December 16, 2019 at 11:30pm EST to apply for a stipend.
