Wellesley Signature Internships

Explore funded opportunities, with guidance from Career Education throughout your internship.

Signature Internships are funded internships with organizations who consistently offer opportunities to Wellesley students for intern placement. These internship hosts are leading cultural, educational, and scientific institutions; international agencies; advocacy and community organizations; and businesses both within the United States and in countries around the world.

Every internship is different. While some placements require a higher level of initiative, autonomy, or definitive project proposals at the beginning of the internship, others are structured to allow their interns the opportunity to explore a greater variety of ways to interact with the organization. Interns are placed with a vetted host and engage in personal and professional development over the summer through career education training (internship orientation and reflection assignments) and mentorship during their work experiences.

Eligibility: Signature Internship opportunities are available to sophomores and juniors only with the following exceptions:

  • First-years are eligible to apply to Aga Khan Educational Services in Uganda (Global Citizenship internship site)
  • Seniors are eligible to apply to EFA Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop (American Cities internship site)

Sophomores and juniors should read internship descriptions carefully as some opportunities may indicate a preference for class year. The Lumpkin Institute for Service Learning Program is exclusively open to sophomores. International students and students studying abroad (one semester or full-year) are welcome to apply. Students on leave for the entire academic year are ineligble. All Signature Internships participants must be enrolled at the College for Fall 2021 or participating in a study abroad program.

Signature Internship Areas: Signature Internships provides opportunities in 5 distinct internship areas, which are organized by geographic location or field. Information about each area and the placements available are provided in the links at the bottom of the page. Students may apply to one Signature Internship area (e.g., American Cities Internships or Global Citizenship Internships) and up to two placements within a selected area in a given application cycle. Applications to more than one internship area from a single student will not be considered. After a student decides which internship area and placement(s) interest them, they need to prepare their application. We strongly recommend students to complete the Internship Application Pathway, a resource to help them develop a competitive application.

Stipend Amount: $2,500 - $5,000, depending on whether internship is virtual or in-person. For most sites, we will not be able to confirm this information until Spring term.

Important information about Summer 2021: While some partners have already confirmed that their internships for Summer 2021 will be virtual, decisions for other placements will not come until Spring term. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, some internships partners are unsure about whether they can offer an in-person, virtual, or can offer an internship at all (though all hope to do so). We will update this information as we receive confirmation from our partners. The College is also a partner in determining whether funded internships will take place in-person or in a virtual format. It continues to monitor the pandemic closely and we anticipate decisions on summer programming to come during Spring term.

Summer Internship Credit Approval: Students participating in Signature Internships are pre-approved to receive non-academic credit for their experience; the credit request process is integrated in the application process.
