Books have become the latest casualty in our culture’s war on words, on what words mean, and how we use and imbibe them to acquire knowledge. The eight artists featured in KFA’s show use discarded books to create two- and three- dimensional art pieces whose unifying thread is an appreciation for the touch, smell, visual and intellectual heft of the printed word.
All the works included in the show were selected both for their content and visual appeal. Their deceptively beautiful appearance is juxtaposed with an inherent nostalgia for lost information and a rapidly dwindling audience for words on paper. In a time when the term “intellectual elites” seems to refer to anyone who reads and when the meaning of both truth and science is being questioned, these works are a reminder of the beauty, poignancy and importance of sharing knowledge through a timeless instrument: the book.
