Friends of Art DC: Private Tour with Fran Burka

Sunday, October 16, 2016 - 2:00pm
Friendship Heights, Chevy Chase, Maryland

Throughout their long marriage, Frances Burka and her late husband, Leonard, were enthusiastic collectors of crafts and art. They began buying American prints from the period between the two world wars, and those prints are still Fran's favorite works of art.  They then acquired some more contemporary art, mostly prints, by Washington artists.  Fran has been involved with the Renwick, the Smithsonian’s craft gallery, and she and Leonard went on many craft trips with the museum and acquired some glass and ceramic pieces, again mostly by American artists.  One wonderful byproduct of these trips is that they were  fortunate to have met many of these artists and watched them work.  It has been quite a journey that began with Art History 101 at Wellesley.

We will have the opportunity to see their collection through Fran's eyes, as she welcomes us to her home and tells us about how they collected these works and the ideas that guided their collecting.  The house is in Friendship Heights, Chevy Chase  MD. Those with confirmed reservations will be provided with full info.

DetailsSpace is limited.  Friends of Art members will be given priority through Oct 3.

Event costs: Recent Grads (2012-2016) $10; Friends of Art members $20; Guests $30 (space available).
