Artist’s Statement

My practice centers on history and its narrative, considering how popular media circulates and shapes collective memory, contemporary history and social realities. Working primarily with video, installation and digital media, my work disrupts what is considered the mainstream viewing experience of narrative film and television by altering both its spatial and narrative elements. Using long and slow video footage and oscillating between film and photography, I reproduce moments captured from global collective memories and personal stories (my own and others’) that have a historical dimension. From the detached perspective provided by the camera, I draw attention to the media’s role in constructing events, our memories of them, and our responses to the landscape itself. The landscape and built environment are main characters throughout my work, as are the structural elements like the camera work and sound. They all come together to tell a story that is tied to the viewer’s awareness of its construct, rather than the traditional immersive stories provided by mainstream films and television.
