American Art

The consideration of American art—its styles, subjects, and sources—shifts over time as the borders and peoples encompassed by this term change. This gallery contains works of art from the Davis permanent collections broadly termed American, here encompassing art of the area that is now the United States as well as Mexico and South America. Some works on view predate the term, American; as well, the gallery includes contemporary objects that extend toward global definitions of art. Together, these paintings and sculptures raise questions about the complex issues surrounding what it means to call an artwork—or, in turn, a person, place, or culture—American today.
