Academic Year Programs

International Christian University (Middlebury Program)

What: Sponsored by Middlebury College at the International Christian University in Tokyo, the program practices Middlebury’s ‘immersion’ method by requiring students to do the bulk of their academic work in Japanese. On-site Middlebury program director guides students through all aspects of university life in Japan. Dormitory housing.

When: Academic year, spring semester, summer
Costs: Equivalent to the cost of a year at Wellesley; financial aid transfers.

Kyoto Center for Japanese Studies (KCJS)

What: Located in Kyoto, KCJS offers a demanding Japanese language program and cultural studies courses taught in English, many that take advantage of being located in one of Japan’s great cultural centers.  The program also features a Community Involvement Project (CIP), which requires students to interact with city residents in Japanese. Homestay or apartment options.

Nanzan University

What: Nanzan offers intensive Japanese language courses from elementary to advanced as well as culture courses in English. Many extracurricular learning opportunities are available. Homestay program.

Hokkaido International Foundation (Mayling Soong approved)

What: HIF offers an intensive, university-level Japanese language course that emphasizes proficiency-oriented instruction. Compulsory homestay.

Princeton in Ishikawa Program (Mayling Soong approved)

What: An eight-week intensive Japanese language program, offering second and third-year Japanese courses in Kanazawa, a historical center known as ‘little Kyoto.’ The Ishikawa Prefectural Government hosts this program and locates homestay families for students.

International Christian University (Summer) (Mayling Soong approved)

What: The International Christian University (ICU) in Tokyo offers an intensive six-week summer program. Approximately 16 hours of Japanese language instruction per week. Students live in ICU dormitories.

What: 9-week intensive Japanese language immersion program at Middlebury College (elementary to advanced level). Social and cultural activities including weekend parties, talent shows, and field days.

Nanzan University (Summer) (Mayling Soong Approved)

What: An intensive six-week summer program at the Center for Japanese Studies at Nanzan. Japanese language courses from pre-intermediate to pre-advanced level in addition to a Japanese culture course and a course in Japanese arts (hanga ‘woodblock printing’ and ikebana ‘flower arrangement’).
