There are four partner institutions in South Korea that are officially approved for student exchange and collaboration. If you wish to study at academic institutions in South Korea as an exchange student, you should first contact Jennifer Thomas-Starck (ois@wellesley.edu) at the Office of International Study for the details of the selection process such as eligibility, required documents and deadlines.
 

Yonsei University

What: A rigorous one or two semester program at Yonsei University, which is located at the heart of the college district, Shinchon, in Seoul. As a highly selective, English-language, four-year liberal arts institution, UIC encourages vibrant intellectual exchange by bringing scholars and students from different fields together into one program. The UIC program offers interdisciplinary courses designed to help students navigate the complex intellectual landscape of the modern world across humanities, arts, social sciences, business, and Engineering and science including Korean language and East Asian Studies.

When: Fall (September 1 to mid December), Spring (March 2 to mid-June), or Academic Year

Seoul National University

What: A one or two semester-long direct exchange program at Seoul National University on the Gwanak Campus, located in Seoul. Undergraduate students from partner institutions(including Wellesley) will choose one of 16 colleges that best suits their academic goals orbackground at the time of application, but may enroll in a wide variety of courses from all other colleges. This program offers both undergraduate and graduate students a vibrant intellectual community with a wealth of resources and opportunities at hand to more fully explore various programs of interest. Applicants must have completed at least one semester at their home undergraduate program before applying.

When: Fall (September 1 to mid December), Spring (March 16 to June 19), or Academic Year

KAIST (NEW!!!)

What: A one or two semester-long direct exchange program at KAIST located in Daejeon. KAIST is one of the top academic institutes offering the best science and technology education to its students. KAIST has three campuses, one in Seoul and two in Daejeon (the main campus and the Munji campus). As the leading research institute, about 80% of courses are offered in English, and more than 1,000 international students from over 90 countries are studying at KAIST.

Ewha Woman's University

What: One or two semester-long "International Exchange and Study Abroad Program" for exchange and visiting students between Wellesley College and Ewha Woman's University, which is located in the heart of Seoul. This program has been established for students who are interested in a wide-range of studies, including topics on Asia and Korea, and it is open to undergraduate and graduate students from any accredited institution of higher education. Students have the option to study for one or two semesters at Ewha as a non-degree seeking student. All international students enrolled in the program may register in any of the courses offered by Ewha, either in English or Korean, depending on their language proficiency.

  • Housing application deadline is June 30 for the fall semester and December 31 for the spring semester.

                                                     Summer Programs

 

Summer Language Study Abroad Fundings

 

 At present, approximately half of the annual expendable budget is allocated to fund summer scholarships   that support language study in East and South Asia. No awards will be made for language programs outside Asia. Applicants for summer study grants must have completed one year of language study at Wellesley and include a recommendation letter from their language instructor at Wellesley with the application. Only students with a 3.0 minimum average in their language courses will be considered. Please check with your language professor for a list of recommended programs.

The grant process entails completing the following process, through an online application tool that will be available here.  

Applications are due in March in general

 

       U.S. citizen or national at the time of your application; One year of language study prior to your application

 

 

The Gilman Scholarship Program is an undergraduate grant program for U.S. citizens of limited financial means to enable them to study abroad, thereby internationalizing their outlook and better preparing them to thrive in the global economy. Receiving a Federal Pell Grant during the time of application or provide proof that they will be receiving a Pell Grant during the term of their study abroad program or internship.

 

The Boren Undergraduate Scholarship is for freshman through seniors who are U.S. citizens. The Boren provides students up to $20,000 to study abroad in Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East. The applicant should have a broad interest in national security.

 

 

Postgraduate Programs

Foreign Languages and Area Studies Fellowships support graduate and undergraduate study in modern foreign languages in combination with area studies, international studies, or international or area aspects of professional studies.

 

The Fulbright is for U.S. citizens who are seniors, graduate/professional students, and graduates. The Fulbright fully funds one year of study or research in any country where there is a Fulbright Commission. Some shorter term and English teaching programs are available.

 

Since 1990, the Blakemore Foundation, with the support of The Freeman Foundation, has awarded over $17 million in grants to college graduates and young professionals for an academic year abroad in full-time intensive language study. The fellowships cover tuition and a stipend for related educational expenses, basic living costs and transportation.
Superior candidates pursuing careers in fields such as academia, STEM (science, technology, engineering, math), international business, accounting, law, medicine, journalism, architecture, teaching, social or NGO work, and government service are encouraged to apply.

 

To provide international students with opportunities to conduct advanced studies in undergraduate & graduate programs at higher educational institutions in the Republic of Korea in order to promote international exchanges in education and mutual friendship between countries.
