Blind Spot
an exhibition of new work by 2023-24 Cole Fellow Kaitlyn Jo Smith
November 13 — November 21, 2024
Blind Spot is the 2024 Alice C. Cole '42 Exhibition, featuring new artwork by Cole Fellow Kaitlyn Jo Smith. The exhibition will be on view in the Jewett Art Gallery from Oct. 26 - Nov. 21, 2024, with an opening reception 4:30-5:30 pm on Friday Oct. 25.
This multimedia sculptural installation will transform the gallery. Over a year in the making, Blind Spot examines the tension between the rise of automated trucking technologies and the history, present, and potential futures of American truckers.
Kaitlyn Jo Smith is an Arizona-based interdisciplinary artist whose work looks at the impact of technology, automation, and artificial intelligence on labor, religion, and the cultural landscape of America's working class.
Smith was the recipient of the 2023-24 Alice C. Cole '42 Fellowship. Awarded to an outstanding early career painter or sculptor, the Cole Fellowship provides funds to support a year of time and space to experiment, develop a body of work, and focus on future artistic goals. The fellowship is made possible by the generous bequest of Wellesley alumna Alice C. Cole '42. Aware of the burdens that face recent graduates of art school, Ms. Cole makes it possible for artists to have 'a limited time free of economic necessity' - an immensely valuable gift.
Located on the 2nd (main) floor of the Jewett Arts Center, the Jewett Art Gallery is open to the public 10:00 am - 5:00 pm Monday-Friday and 12:00 - 5:00 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. The Gallery is free to visit. Visitor parking is available at the Davis Parking Facility or Distribution Lot on Wellesley’s campus; see here for more information about visiting campus.
