Herrmann Lecture: Matthew D. Morrison
Topic: The Political Stakes of Blacksound
Matthew D. Morrison, Ph.D., a native of Charlotte, North Carolina, is a musicologist, violinist, and Associate Professor in the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts.
His latest publication, Blacksound, is a new concept for understanding the history of the American popular music industry.
The Spring 2025 Herrmann Lecture topic by Matthew D. Morrison will consider the legacy of American popular music through Morrison’s concept of “Blacksound,” developed in his book of the same title. More specifically, Morrison will consider what is at stake, politically and otherwise, in our creation, consumption, and circulation of popular music and entertainment—historically and at present.
The Herrmann Lecture is an annual special lecture presented by a visiting expert in the field of music and is generously funded by The Frederick and Minnie Herrmann Memorial Fund.
