Drive File Stream

Google Drive File Stream

Drive File Stream is Google's new Windows and Mac app for syncing files from your Google Drive to your computer. It replaces the old Drive Client. The main new feature with this app is that it saves space on your computer by only downloading the files from your Drive as you go to open them for the first time. The app will download placeholders for your Drive files and folders, which saves space on your computer by only downloading and syncing the files you want to use.

The old Google Drive Client will stop syncing files on May 12, 2018.

This does NOT affect any functionality of Google Drive use in web browsers, such as Chrome or Firefox.

Get the new Drive File Stream Client:

WIndows:

  • If you have the old Drive Client installed, it will prompt you to upgrade the next time your restart your computer.  Click the button, which will send you to a website with information.  Download the File Stream client from the website.

    • If you are on a College-owned computer and running an older Mac OS X, please contact the Help Desk before upgrading.

  • The Backup & Sync Client is Google's new consumer version. It works the same was as the old Drive Client, by downloading your entire Google Drive to your computer, and it will aslo ask to backup your Documents and Photos folders.  However, it does not support Team Drive.  You may use this Client instead of File Stream if you wish.
