For Faculty

Wellesley College is pleased to offer a range of short-term international faculty exchange and travel opportunities

University of Bologna, Italy

As part of our longstanding arrangements with the University of Bologna through the ECCO (Eastern College Consortium: Wellesley, Vassar & Wesleyan), faculty members from each university are invited to apply for short term (typically 2 weeks) travel to Bologna, Italy, to work on personal research, interact with University of Bologna faculty, ECCO staff & students, and engage in some teaching activity. The University of Bologna covers the cost of lodging for the period spent there (but not board); Wellesley covers transatlantic travel costs for up to $2500.
Wellesley participants include: Peggy Levit (Sociology), Marjorie Agosin (Spanish), Takis Metaxis (Computer Science).
Application process: Interested faculty are required first to find a "sponsor" among the University of Bologna faculty who submits an application on the Wellesley faculty member's behalf to a University of Bologna committee. A sponsor can be either a member of the University of Bologna faculty with whom the Wellesley faculty has already collaborated with or can be someone in the Wellesley candidate's field contacted with the help of the Department of Italian Studies and/or ECCO staff in Bologna. More than one Wellesley faculty member may apply to the faculty Exchange at the same time. Knowledge of Italian is not required.
Deadline: mid December for exchanges in the following calendar year.

Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona, Spain

An agreement between the Department of Humanities at Universitat Pompeu Fabra and Wellesley College was signed in 2009 to foster faculty exchanges. Faculty in all disciplines with an interest in the scholarly collections and research opportunities at UPF are encouraged to apply. One Wellesley faculty member will go during the 15-16 academic year, and during the following year, one UPF faculty member will come to Wellesley. Alternation will continue in this manner. The exchange period may last from two to eight weeks (during either semester). Wellesley will cover the cost of round-trip transportation to Barcelona (including associated ground transportation) and living expenses on site for a total contribution of up to $5000, depending on length of stay. Each hosting institution will assist in identifying appropriate lodging. Costs associated with traveling companions will not be covered and are the responsibility of the scholar. Participating faculty will be asked to submit a brief report summarizing their work at UPF to the International Study Committee.
Application process: Applicants are strongly encouraged to identify and contact specific individuals at UPF with whom they intend to collaborate, in advance of submitting an application, and reciprocal applications (in which the visiting faculty member will later host colleagues from the partner institution) will be given preference. Applications are due to the International Study Committee. The application deadline will be April 1 for the following academic year.
Wellesley participants include: Joseph Joyce (Economics)

Fudan University, Shanghai, China:

The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures has a multifaceted exchange agreement with the Department of Chinese at Fudan University. The agreement functions at both student and faculty levels, and both levels are based on reciprocal exchange. The faculty exchange is as follows. One faculty member will travel to the other institution in alternative years. During the years that a person from Wellesley goes to Fudan, Wellesley will contribute $2500 toward the cost of travel and Fudan will contribute $2500 toward the cost of housing, meals, and other living expenses. The opposite is true during the years a person from Fudan travels to Wellesley. The exchange period may last from between two and eight weeks, during which time the visitor will collect research materials or complete a research project.
Wellesley participants include: Mingwei Song (EALC)
