Ted Wang Fellowship for Study Abroad in Asia

Ted Wang Fellowship for Study in Asia

Wellesley's Ted Wang Fellowship encourages Wellesley College students considering an international career in Asia to gain advanced language skills in an East Asian language and knowledge of the richness of East Asian culture. During a semester in their junior or senior year, Fellows undertake a rigorous semester of study at one of our partner institutions in China, Korea, or Japan and receive a stipend to cover the expenses of networking with professionals in their host country.

At least two years of language study will be required before departure (202 or equivalent). Ted Wang Fellows will receive a stipend to cover expenses of networking with professionals in their host country. Wang Fellows submit a two to three-page report on their experiences in East Asia upon their return and contribute to the EALC departmental blog.

Academic Program

Ted Wang Fellows will study abroad during the Spring semester in Japan, Korea or China in programs with excellent foreign language instruction and access to content courses relevant to the student’s academic and professional interests. At the conclusion of the program, students will take the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview or similar and receive a certificate attesting to the language proficiency.

Networking

Over the course of the semester, each student will be expected to conduct 6-8 informational interviews with professionals working in an industry that is of interest to the student. These may take place in the host city or elsewhere in the host country. Students will be connected to Wellesley alumnae networks for support in arranging these interviews. Fellows will receive a stipend of $2000 to cover costs related to this project.

"In sum, these past three weeks have been more exhilarating and eye-opening than I ever imagined. By interviewing Shanghai residents and collaborating with colleagues, I’m learning more about the life of a journalist as well as the life in this city. And as I study my colleagues’ own work and hone my writing skills, I’m also improving my Mandarin."

- Olivia Lewis, 2018-19 Fellow, Shanghai

"This opportunity is really pushing me to pursue a life here, so, who knows, maybe it will happen. I will continue to explore career paths and life in Japan through this fellowship, thank you very much for everything!"

- Sophia Ginard Ramirez, 2018-19 Fellow, Tokyo
