This course introduces students to texts and cultural productions from across Buddhist traditions. Students will explore questions of gender, representation, and power in a variety of genres and media, including literature, doctrinal and philosophical works, monastic codes, film and theater. We shall analyze how authors and creators use literary and performative strategies to challenge, reinforce, or reimagine social hierarchies and religious authority, situating works in their historical, cultural, and social contexts. Close reading of texts alongside careful study of visual and performative works will be central, with attention to authority, authenticity, and the interplay between religion and culture.
