An applied developmental psychologist whose teaching and research emphasize the application of developmental theory to optimize positive and healthy developmental outcomes across diverse populations.

As an applied developmental psychologist, my teaching and research emphasize the application of developmental theory to optimize positive and healthy developmental outcomes across diverse populations. I am particularly interested in how human development and context interact to shape dynamic patterns of behavior among diverse youth, and how we can use this science-based knowledge to inform program, practice, and policy related to youth and families. My research focuses on identifying and describing the influence of individual and contextual factors that impact well-being outcomes for youth in school and out-of-school-time settings. I am also interested in the role of cultural context and gender in shaping adolescents’ perceptions of body image and eating attitudes.

A common theme across both my teaching and research is an emphasis on applying strength-based perspectives to examine, describe, and understand human development and behavior. One of my central goals as an educator is to invite students to rethink traditional psychological theories (that are largely deficit-based) related to human development. My course offerings include Introduction to Psychology and two seminars, Psychology of Adulthood and Aging and Adolescence: Bridging Research and Practice. I am deeply passionate about sparking students’ excitement for the field of psychology and my connections with students are what truly energize me as a teacher. That my students, somehow, see their own experiences, the field of psychology, or society differently because of their classroom experience is the metric by which I measure my effectiveness as a teacher.

In addition to my professional interests, I enjoy spending time with my husband and daughter, exploring nature, hiking, eating dark chocolate, and uncovering new spots for outdoor fun around New England.
