Waitlists & Permission of the Instructor Required

Guide to Workday Waitlist and Permission of Instructor Required

Please refer to this guide to Workday Waitlists and Permission of Instructor Required - it outlines how each functions, when the two can be used in tandem and when they are mutually exclusive, and includes recommendations for when certain options are most appropriate.

Definitions:

  • Waitlist - when a course has a waitlist, an offer to join the class will be sent to the student next in line on the Waitlist when a seat is available. Instructors have the option of letting the Waitlist make offers to students in the order in which they waitlisted, or they can re-order and prioritize their waitlist.
  • Permission of Instructor Required - when a course indicates that Permission of Instructor is Required, students must contact the instructor directly to inquire about a seat in the course. The instructor will need to submit an override for the student in order to allow them to register themselves in Workday. A student who has Permission of Instructor Override will be able to register for the course only if there is a seat available.

Faculty will be prompted for their Waitlist Preferences at the same time they are asked for other Course Preferences during the scheduling process - in late February for the Fall term and in late September for Spring. The Registrar's Office will send communication to all faculty when it is time to input Faculty Course Preferences. The link to the app is:

If you have any questions, please call or email the Registrar's office (x2307, registrar@wellesley.edu)

Students are encouraged to remember that no matter whether a course has a waitlist or not, and regardless of what kind of waitlist it has, it is important to attend the first class session in order to remain registered or to secure a seat in the class.

To find out whether a course has a waitlist, and if it does what kind, refer to the Course Browser. Check the upper right corner of the course description.

  • Blue W - the course has a Workday Waitlist. Students can waitlist for the course in Workday - the process is the same as attempting to register. If there is a seat available when a student attempts to register they will be registered, and if there is not they will be waitlisted intstead. Please refer to the complete Workday Waitlist Instructions for Students.
  • Green W - the course has an Alternate Waitlist. Alternate waitlists are used in cases where the course has multiple lectures and labs. To register for the course, students must click on the green W and rank the lecture and lab sections in order of preference (1 being most preferred, 5 being least preferred) and save their rankings.
  • Permission: Instructor Permission Required (in red font at the bottom of the course description) - students need to reach out to the instructor directly to inquire about a seat in the class.
