Writing is a powerful tool for building knowledge

and a means of engaging with and influencing the world.

All Wellesley students take one semester of First-Year Writing (FYW), which offers a lively, practical introduction to college-level writing. Our FYW classes are small, discussion-based seminars taught by experienced faculty members. They provide a space in which students get to explore an inspiring topic while receiving valuable instruction in writing and revision. FYW classes also help students develop their speaking and presentation skills, and they serve as supportive communities for first-year students. Writing at the college level requires proficient handling of evidence, analysis, argument, and structure. FYW provides a foundation for students as they cultivate these skills and gain confidence as writers. These classes launch students on their writing paths, through college and beyond, equipping students to exercise their voice, educate others, and identify paths for change.

The Writing Program administers First-Year Writing courses, an intensive writing workshop and tutorial (WRIT 201), and a selection of upper-level writing courses. It also operates a thriving peer writing tutor program.
