My best friend Bronwen Kahn and I arrived at Wellesley in the fall of 1987, and she couldn’t stop talking about joining one of the athletic teams—the crew team. She hadn’t been on any sports teams in high school; I had never heard of rowing, but I thought, “Sure, I can try that. Swimming doesn’t start for months!”
Along with 30-40 other first-years and sophomores, we learned how to row on Lake Waban, in the tubs. We heard ourselves referred to as “women” and not “girls.” And we made the cut!
The night we found out, many of us headed to the Ville for ice cream. When asked why we were celebrating, there was no bigger thrill than to say, “we are the crew team!”
Now 35 years later, we remain together, a team. Go Blue Crew, thanks for the lifelong friendships.
