Tamara Susan Nash ’79
- 1970s
As a first-generation college student from Providence, Rhode Island, I was taught that education is the key to success.
Wellesley alumna Betty Jo Calhoun “BJ,” the college counselor at Lincoln School, a private Quaker school for girls, advised me to apply to Wellesley early decision. Born three days after my mother, the childless, breast-cancer survivor BJ claimed me as a surrogate daughter. In June 1979, she attended Wellesley commencement with my family. As a graduation gift, BJ gave me five framed sketches of Wellesley, the gift that her mother commissioned an artist to create for BJ’s Wellesley graduation in 1952.
Angels appear in our lives to advise, guide, love and support us. BJ was the angel in my life who introduced me to our beloved alma mater Wellesley, and influenced my pursuit of a career in postsecondary education.
