Wellesley Faculty and Staff Make a Statement Against Aggression

Wellesley faculty and staff sign letter of condemnation
November 15, 2016

In a show of solidarity with Wellesley students, the faculty and staff of Wellesley College signed a statement condemning acts of intimidation.

"We, the undersigned, condemn in the strongest possible terms the intimidating and callous invasion of our campus by two students from a neighboring college on 11/9/16 and affirm President Paula Johnson’s statement the next day: “I am with you, your deans are with you, your professors are with you, and the administration is with you.” We faculty and staff members stand by our students now and will always defend their right to engage in their studies, “live peacefully, and enjoy other basic rights free from bias-motivated threats, intimidation, coercion and violence” (The Massachusetts Civil Rights Act). We are grateful to our President, to the Provost’s Office, to the Wellesley Campus Police, and to the senior staff of Babson College for their leadership and support in the face of this insult to our community. We urge students who are frightened, anxious, or vulnerable to reach out to their class deans, the chaplaincy, mental health services, or other members of our community for support. For our part, we intend to reject this hate by committing ourselves to the support of all Wellesley students, and to sustaining an ongoing dialogue about how to keep our campus a place of justice, inclusion, and striving for clarity."
