My senior year at Wellesley, biology teacher Miss Mary Austin shared that she recently learned humans only have 46 chromosomes. (It was thought they had 48.) That week I was interviewing at the University of Washington Medical School and the interviewer asked how many chromosomes humans had. I said it had recently been found that they only had 46 and he was impressed! To this day, I feel that was why I was accepted.
Once in medical school, I signed up for a Medical Genetics elective because of my experience with Miss Mary Austin. I was the only person to do so, which meant that I had a full hour every week with Dr. Arno Motulsky. I loved it and started doing summer research and ended up obtaining my Master’s in genetics in addition to my medical degree, launching my career in Medical Genetics. All thanks to Miss Mary Austin!
