A supportive friend is a treasure; a supportive boss is a gift of grace. A partnership of both within the same person is a miracle. In my 20 years of teaching at PERA, I have experienced wonderful alliances with students and leaders, but the outstanding support and friendship of my boss, Martha Dietrick, who unstintingly gives of herself, deserves poetry with a deep curtsy.

DEAR FRIEND 

Respect grows deeper with years,

Or lives not at all.

Entwined in miles of dedication

Muscle is woven from weekly care

Abiding in bone and sinewed elegance

Shape-shifting through years together.

A soulful extravagance lies

Hidden in this radiantly quiet friendship.

You have taught me to sing in greater harmony,

Share talent and dream creative hopes.

You have partnered me as a wild wind-dancer,

Mad poet, and dreamer of dreams.

You have never refused me your grace.
