An accomplished cardiologist and the first Black woman president of Wellesley College, Dr. Paula Johnson’s life’s work is improving quality of care for women and women of color around the world.

(Petra Rivera-Rideau, professor of American studies, was featured in Puerto Rican newspaper El Nuevo Dia in an article that covers the importance of reggaetón artist Daddy Yankee's career over the past 20 years. It is in honor of his retirement concerts he will play in the next few weeks there. In the print edition, it was part of an entire insert about him and his legacy.)

"In the United States, [Spanish and Portuguese people] are not racialized as Latinos in the same way as people from Latin America," says Petra Rivera-Rideau, professor of American studies. "Latin music as a category that's just language-based — so you don't have to think about race, you don't have to think about national origin, you don't have to think about any of those tricky things that can provoke a lot of contention and just celebrate Spanish — is very convenient."  

This year’s recipients of Wellesley’s highest honor are Vanessa Ruiz ’72, Faith Vilas ’73, and Cecilia Conrad ’76.

"The Incredible Women Making Strides in Science" is an upcoming series highlighting the women changing the fields of astronomy, medicine, physics, psychology, healthcare, and science communication. The series will profile 10 leaders, including President Paula Johnson.

We asked faculty and researchers at the College how they’d solve a problem related to their field, if time and money weren’t constraints.

Wellesley reached out to a range of alums in publishing—from author Jasmine Guillory ’97 to agents, editors, and a bookseller—for their thoughts about the industry today and advice for getting an idea out of the notebook and into the hands of readers.
