Hilda Lloréns
Mary L. Cornille Distinguished Scholar in Residence in the Humanities
My research is centrally concerned with critiquing structural inequalities and dismantling taken-for-granted notions of power.
Currently Professor of Anthropology at the University of Rhode Island, I am delighted to have been chosen as the Mary L. Cornille Distinguished Scholar in Residence in the Humanities for the current academic year.
My research, writing, and teaching focus on race, gender, ecology and environment, and culture and power in the Americas. I have written about these topics in academic journals and books, as well as in popular readership online and print magazines. I am committed to anti-racist, decolonial, and inclusive thought, research, and pedagogy.
At the Newhouse Center, I will be working on a book project that combines ethnographic fieldwork with analysis of cultural production. Nature Practices will employ a narrative storytelling method to document the relationship of Latinx populations with nature and the outdoors in the United States. Like my previous monographs, Imaging The Great Puerto Rican Family: Framing Nation, Race, and Gender during the American Century (Lexington Books/Rowman & Littlefield, 2014) and the award-winning Making Livable Worlds: Afro-Puerto Rican Women Building Environmental Justice (University of Washington Press, 2021), this monograph will develop a multivalent (her)story considering not only the human dimensions of environmental knowledge and engagement, but also accounting for nature itself in this era of climate chaos.
As the Cornille Scholar in Residence, I will also run four faculty research seminars during the academic year, as well as deliver a public lecture to the community. I am excited to use my research interests and methodological approach to further this year’s theme: Radical Resistance.
I live in Providence, RI with my husband Carlos, my teenager Khalil, and two mutts, Billie and Marley. I plant and tend to a small garden, am a mindfulness practitioner, and an outdoor enthusiast.
