Synthetic Organic Chemistry; Design of New Tuberculosis Antimicrobials; Near-Infrared Spectroscopy

My research centers on the discovery of new drug candidates against tuberculosis and uses the methods of synthetic organic chemistry for drug design. The goal of my research is an improvement of the effectiveness of antituberculars through manipulation of compound structure, recognizing the complex relationships that exist among drug, pathogen and human host. The research has fostered collaborations with physicians, microbiologists and pharmacologists in academic, industrial and government laboratories. Student projects have been a critical part of the progress of the research.

My teaching duties usually include strong involvement in Organic Chemistry I and Organic Chemistry II, but I also frequently teach at the introductory chemistry level. I especially enjoy seeing the progress of students whom I have met in their first year of chemistry as they go on to study organic. I am keenly interested in working with students to help them to make the intellectual connections between chemistry and their other scientific endeavors.

For many years, I have served as Associate Executive Editor of Organic Preparations and Procedures International, a journal devoted to the practice of synthetic organic chemistry.
