Because you can choose a topic that’s meaningful to you (globalization, neuroscience, postcolonial North Africa, science fiction and fantasy, etc.). Because professors are teaching about topics that are meaningful to them. Because you’ll do things (think critically, write clearly, search for and synthesize information from a range of sources, love learning) that are practical, pleasurable, and invaluable on the open market.
