Carolyn A. Kerr ’80

Gliding across Lake Waban in an old wooden shell after stumbling from Munger to the boathouse in pre-dawn darkness, I was tired. My starboard oar belonged in the cold, clear water. Pull, sweep, Power 10. Flying.

Novice 8 intercollegiate Crew Team, Seat 7. Facing the coxswain, I could glimpse the lush and welcoming campus as fog lifted. On a good day we eight rowed in balanced unison while trying to avoid causing grievous bodily injuries with mammoth oars.

Wellesley = empowerment. Rowing, learning, languages, and the rest of it. Lifelong Munger friends Martha, Eli (Lizard), Corinne, Pam & Ellie, remembered for our legendary caper: surreptitiously hanging the red “80” on Jewett before graduation breakfast.

Skimming effortlessly across the glistening lake, I listened as the birds sang their heavenly songs. Visceral, fleeting, yet lasting. Wellesley memories.
