Wellesley in the late 1970s was a great place. I was from New Jersey and was assigned a roommate from southern California, in Beebe fourth floor, freshman year. (Yes, we were called freshmen.) The Vil junior across the hall was from Pakistan. This was exciting! We learned about Bells, Callers, and doing our hours at the Bell Desk.
The big weather event was the blizzard of ’78. Classes were cancelled that February, a first as far as we knew. My Claflin neighbor was in PJs for days, while a bunch of us trekked into the Vil. We were creative with our free time since classes had barely started, meaning no homework! And we definitely used the tunnel to get to Tower for meals!
Wellesley was academic, yes, but lessons about the Honor Code, critical thinking, trying your best and being respectful still ring true today — if not more so.
