Freshman year, 1963, first floor, Beebe: My roommate Debbe was the rosy-cheeked daughter of a sheep herder from Casper, Wyoming. I was a Beatnik, modern dancer, daughter of a NYC real estate broker. No one thought we would get along. We became great friends. I enjoyed eating oysters. She enjoyed eating Rocky Mountain oysters (what’s removed from castrated sheep!)
Debbe ended up being the more daring roommate. When her mom sent a Bourbon cake, she scored a small bottle of Bourbon to soak into the cake which she wrapped and hid in the back of the closet. It became a tasty, inebriating treat!
At some point, Debbe drove herself to Mexico for a botched abortion that sadly left her sterile. Later she bravely adopted two boys and ran a nanny service. Debbe is no longer with us. I have no photos, but her image is etched in my memory.
