How can I explain, in 150 words or fewer, why our theme song was “I Got You Babe”? That I was Sonny, and she Cher? It’s not complicated, just a Wellesley roomie-relationship story.

Mary Moehn Langfeldt and I learned in 1974 that we were matched as roommates. We did not know yet what would become obvious upon meeting at Wellesley: We were destined to be lifelong friends.

Our first-year dorm room in Davis was cramped, but Mary and I didn’t care. We perched happily on our narrow bunk beds overlooking a dumpster. Such a noisy way to bond!

Mary was the extrovert, I the introvert. She slept late, I awakened early. Mary postponed studying and aced every exam; I clung to Clapp Library.

Although seemingly opposites, we got each other (babe!) and agreed on everything essential—since September 1974. Thank you, Wellesley, for launching this amazing friendship.
