Two experiences at Wellesley had a lasting impact on my life.
One was an impulsive decision to volunteer for the US Army’s, on-campus research study in 1976 of the effects of endurance training on women co-sponsored by Wellesley’s Athletic Department under Director Linda Vaughan. In nine weeks, I went from never having run a mile to being able to run seven miles in under an hour and developed a love of middle-distance running. The program reinforced not being limited by the expectations of others and gave me a training framework for remaining active without the structure of organized sports.
The other was using Professor Quinn’s critiques of my English papers to improve my critical reading and distill my writing, so it conveyed what I wanted readers to know. I have applied these skills in a wide variety of professional and volunteer positions.
