My father died very unexpectedly in June 1953, in the middle of final exams my sophomore year. I left immediately for home in Cincinnati, Ohio. Somehow, my belongings were dealt with. But could I return? Of course, was the reply. Your scholarship will be increased; you can assist with the New York Times campus program junior year and head that bureau your senior year. (The NYT was required reading for all PoliSci students.) With that assistance, a summer job, even baby sitting for Tom Moser, I covered all my senior year expenses and travel, a relief for my widowed mother. Of course, tuition at that time was $1850 and train travel, simple. I doubt it would be possible today.
