A woman sits on her desk, her legs crossed, wearing a striped tank top and with short, dark hair.

When Ricki texted me this Polaroid taken in our dorm room in 1968, I realized why I stayed in McAfee all four years in a double room with the same roommate. She sent it in 2020 after our 50th Reunion, when she still remembered.

We could have opted for the views and architecture of Tower Court, the Quad or Stone Davis. We could have qualified for two single rooms or a suite. So why did we remain in McAfee, changing floors each year?

You can see it in my smile: I remember growing and changing in the turbulent 1960s, sharing our lives, hopes, fears, and dreams, knowing we would remain friends. And we have. The look on my face as I perch on the desk reflects my beautiful friend who is taking my picture with her newfangled camera.

She doesn’t remember now. But I do and hope I always will.
