Much attention is paid to the diversity Wellesley brings together, especially in our first year. Roommates navigate night owls with dorm crew members, headphone addicts and “room radio” enthusiasts. There is support for this melding, and advance notice for students matriculating from warmer climates on the importance of a Real Winter Coat. What is often overlooked is footwear.
One of our first year pack from Texas did not understand that her beloved flip-flops would not ferry her over the heaping drifts like snowshoes. She called us frantically from a long, winding, unshoveled sidewalk, toes red and curled after a few tentative steps. We came to her aid, though none of us had a spare pair of boots. Between the three of us, we were able to piggyback to the safety of her room, giggling like mad women as we went.
She’s not heavy, she’s my roommate.
