Laurie Breitkopf ’75
- 1970s
I believe I was the first environmental studies major at Wellesley, in the early 1970s. At the time, this was an independent major that I designed as a first-year student. In the early 1970s in the U.S., environmental protection was a new movement. Now, of course, environmental studies is a department at Wellesley with 30+ current majors. Wellesley allowed me to craft an intellectually stimulating, interdisciplinary and timely major. As I'd planned during my first week at the College, I became an environmental lawyer and practiced environmental law. I'm still an environmental activist, 50 years after graduation!
