The history of Wellesley is inextricably linked to the history of women’s rights, and nowhere is that more prominent than in the Wellesley College Archives.
There are many hidden gems in the archives, including over 6,000 digitized images available to the public. Some of my favorite finds include images of Wellesley students attending a 1915 march for suffrage and organizing a Red Cross unit on campus during World War I, as well as x-ray photographs by Sarah Francis Whiting, who was the first woman to successfully replicate x-ray photographs just weeks after the announcement of their discovery.
I have had the honor of working at Wellesley for the past two years, and it is truly such a gift to be able to be a part of this university’s long-lasting legacy. The archives remind us how far we have come, but also how much more work there is to do.
